We love Prom Season and love helping our customers find their dream prom dress, but what is your dream prom dress? Do you know? Do you have firm ideas on exactly how it should be, or do you literally have no idea? We get our fair share of both sides of the camp and we know that even girls who think they 100% know what they want, don’t always end up with the style they envisaged.
And that’s because, the most important thing about a Prom Dress is not it’s shape, it’s colour or even its fabric, it’s the way it makes you feel that is the key. Your prom dress is all about you, reflecting who you are and your personality. It needs to make you feel amazing and yes, that is sometimes about finding the style that suits your body shape but it’s also about so much more than that. The perfect prom dress will give you an inner confidence and make you feel the very best you can be. There’s nothing like it…
There are so many options out there and we give you an idea below of just a few. We’d love to know what your favourite is and which style you’re leaning towards for Prom 2023. We can’t wait for the season to start in earnest and have SO many gorgeous styles coming in. It’s all getting a little bit exciting!!
So here goes, 8 different styles. There are so many variations on each so these are just elements that can often be mixed and matched. I can never decide which is my favourite as I love so many things about each of them but what I’ve learnt is, it’s not about what I like, or even what your friends and family like, it’s all about YOU!
Embellished
Over the last few years, beading and embroidery have taken more of a back seat. The desire for ‘less is more’ was far more prominent that it had been previously but we’re definitely seeing a resurgence in sparkle. I’ve always loved a little bit of sparkle so have no issue with that! Embellishment is more subtle these days though so it’s just little hints which will sparkle when the light catches and add just a little bit of detail without being too much. What do you think of beading? Do you love or hate it?
Princess
Full on Princess styles never really went away for Prom. There are always going to be girls who dream of a fully beaded, tulle princess dress for prom. These dresses tend to feature full skirts or are the more fishtail styles, fitted until the knee and then flaring out to the floor. Prom feels like such a great opportunity to wear the kind of dress that you would only really ever get to wear maybe a couple of times in life. So, my view is, why not? Do you want to be a princess for the night?
Ruched
Ruched Prom Styles have seen a huge resurgence in recent years. What is not to love about a ruched dress? It actually suits every single body shape and of course can come with all different necklines and back detail. Wear it with a split or none, it’s so flattering and so comfortable to wear. If I were forced to choose a favourite style, I think ruching would be it.
Fitted
Slinky, sexy and super gorgeous a fitted dress is the choice of many a prom girl. It shows off the figure perfectly, can be worn plain or with embellishment, with a simple or detailed back and with or without a split. Not as forgiving as the ruched dress but can look ridiculously stunning….
Simple & Floaty
These dresses tend to have no beading just a structured bodice and either a floaty A Line skirt or a fuller skirt with a little bit more structure. The bodice can be plain or ruched and the skirt can be full or have a split for a little peek of leg when you walk or pose for photos. The other amazing addition to these gorgeous dresses is that very often, the skirt has POCKETS! What’s not to love? These dresses are romantic and oh so perfect for Prom…
Back Detail
For many girls, it’s all about the back. Corset backs (which we love for the fabulous size flexibility they offer), low V backs, Criss Cross back detail, Strappy back detail – they all add a little bit of something different to what might otherwise be a really simple dress. So stunning to catch that hint of detail as a Prom Girl twirls or looks over her shoulder for a photo, the back can never be overlooked as a key factor in choosing a prom dress. Bear in mind though that with a detailed back, a dress (more often than not), cannot be worn with a bra so you need to make sure that it is fully supportive without one.
Halter
So many girls will say that they don’t like a high neck on a Prom Dress but there are also so many girls that change their minds when they try on a halter neck dress. SO flattering on a girl with great shoulders and it can often feel more supportive than its’ low/plunge necked counterparts. Halter neck dresses also tend to have interesting back detail and in our view, should not be dismissed without trying at least one on…
Short
Short is 100% an option for Prom. One of the issues with long dresses for most girls is that they need to be altered to fit as they are all made for the tallest of Prom girls (so made for girls who are 5ft 11 or 6ft) and they therefore, almost always need shortening. With a short prom dress, this is never a problem. There are some super stunning shorter dresses which can feature all of the above elements but just in a shorter length. So, you can have a fully beaded option, a simple floaty style, a fitted ruched number etc. The world really is your oyster – you just have to decide that short is the way you want to go…
